  7. Single column with large difference between side margins.

  9. For the layout to be effective   ┌──────────────┬──────────────┐

  25. If you use large left hand margins, then the extra space can be used
  26. for side headings, subsidiary text, or illustrations.

  28. Advantages: Although not as economical of space as full width text, it
  29. still gets a substantial amount of text onto the page, and gives the
  30. opportunity to add some interest into the pages. Makes for an
  31. attractive layout for sustained reading in a large format document.

  33. Disadvantage: Still too static for an "active" layout.
  34.  
  35. Most suited to sustained reading in large format. Good for documents
  36. which have to look serious but benefit from some "interest".

  38. Typical Proportions for 8-1/2 X 11 page (in inches)

  63. TWO COLUMN LAYOUT with equal width columns
  64.  
  65. Advantages: Easy to manage; usually gives a good width for comfortable
  66. reading. Can be more economical of space than a single column.
  67.  
  68. Disadvantage: Can be dull unless skillfully handled.
  69.  
  70. Suited to almost any sort of publication. For this reason it is likely
  71. to be overused. Two-column layouts are by their very nature static and
  72. so are less suitable for very active layouts.

  74. Typical Proportions for 8-1/2 X 11 pages:
  75.         Text area - 6-7/16 X 9" , 2 cols of 3-1/8" + 3/16" gutter
  76.         Margins - head 3/4, foot 1-1/4, inside 1, outside 1-1/16

  78. Interest can be given to this style by allowing a large top margin to
  79. take the chapter titles and running heads.
  80. Typical Proportions for 8-1/2 X 11 page with large top margin:
  81.         Text area - 6-7/16 X 7-1/2"
  82.         Margins - head 2-1/4, foot 1-1/4, inside 1, outside 1-1/16"
